The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Social Partnership Relations, has created the Barbados Agricultural Marketing and Information System (BARMIS) as part of an integrated knowledge management system to transform the agriculture and fisheries sectors into more internationally competitive, modern, efficient, technology and knowledge-driven sectors.
BARMIS is one of the key strategies which will be employed by the Ministry to reposition the agricultural and fisheries sectors through the establishment of strong linkages with other sectors of the economy, including tourism and manufacturing.
BARMIS is an innovative web-based system which will comprise three components. Bajan Agriculture Market Place, which is an online trading platform to link farmers and other stakeholders within the agricultural value chain, has been developed in the first phase of the project. An Agricultural Market Information System and Farm Management System will be developed in the second phase.
Objective
The main objective of Bajan Agricultural Marketplace is to facilitate greater pricing transparency by removing information gaps between sellers and buyers and strengthening the linkages between players along the agriculture and fisheries value chain, including farmers, fishers, processors, consumers, retailers, manufacturers and the hospitality sector.
