Hurricane Preparedness Tips

Mariners and Boat Owners

• Listen to and take seriously all weather advisories issued by the Barbados Meteorological Services Office.
• Make early arrangements to get your vessels to safety.
• Don’t wait until the last minute to get the boat out of the water.
• Secure all equipment and fishing gear to prevent damage or theft.
• Do not remain on the vessel to ride out the storm or hurricane.
• Secure vessels at the mooring or harbour.
• Do not leave vessels on the beach; they can be damaged by storm surges.
• Comply with the Fisheries Officers on site to have the boat removed by the Tractor Service.
• Make sure there is adequate rope berthing.
• Provide additional fenders to prevent boats from crashing into each other.
• Ensure that the boat is not in danger from falling trees or branches.
• Inform all other fishers at sea through radio, flares and other communication signals. 

Farmers

• Secure farm machinery and tools.
• Farm machinery should be filled with fuel (chainsaws, tractors, trucks.)
• Store enough water and feed to last livestock for at least one week.
• Prune trees and branches that are directly over livestock houses and other farm buildings.
• Clean and clear all watercourses – remove logs and branches.
• Store pesticides and other farm chemicals away from feed and planting materials.
• Secure important documents in waterproof containers.
• Stockpile feed and place at least 2 feet above ground in a dry, flood resistant area.
• Remove cattle and small ruminants from low lying areas and take to higher ground.
• Remove irrigation lines.
• Secure farm records and store in a dry, safe place.
• Disconnect all electrical fixtures on the farm.
• Ensure that you have a first aid kit and store it in a safe dry area.
• Secure planting material for post-storm period.

Citizens and Residents

• Be aware of the possible hazards that may occur. Being prepared can reduce fear, anxiety and losses.
• Keep a full tank of gas in the car.
• Listen to a battery powered radio and follow evacuation instructions.
• Have a family plan that deals with communicating in various situations.
• Gather your family and leave if instructed to do so.
• Stay away from downed power lines.
• Family members with disabilities need to be specially taken care of.
• It is also necessary to prepare a plan for caring for your pets.
• Family members should have first aid skills and know CPR.
